Sofia Airport is the biggest airport in Bulgaria, situated about 9km away from the center of the city. It has the second largest runway on the Balkan peninsula – 3600m, able to receive even the heaviest planes ever made. Annually it serves more than 3 million passengers.
Many tourists choose Sofia Airport for their starting point in exploring Bulgaria, because it is close to most of our winter resorts, among which Borovets, Bansko, Pamporovo, Chepelare and others.
The was found in 1947. The construction of the new terminal finished in 2006. It features the most modern equipment and fits all world standards. Its capacity is 2500 passengers in an hour. There was also a renovation to the runway on terminal one, and it can now handle more than 25 flights/hour.
The regular routes are to over 40 destinations all over the world, and 40 more charters. The airport has signed contracts with more than 30 airlines.
There are many shops, fast foods, restaurants, cafes, banks and currency exchange bureaus. A beautiful park zone was found recently, stretching on over 100acres, where you can have a rest while you are waiting for your flight. Or if you want to take a rest in a tranquil and luxury atmosphere, available to you are the two lounges – Preslav and Pliska.
The airport has a parking with 400 spots. Line 84 from Sofia's public transport connects the center of the city with the airport, but if you have a big luggage you will have to pay for a second ticket. There are two taxi ranks, but the transport has its risks and requires your watchfulness, because of the frequent abuses made by taxi drivers with their tariffs.
