Plovdiv Airport is located near Krumovo village, about 12km southeast from the center of the city. Its busiest period is in the winter season, when it serves tourist flights to Bulgaria's winter resorts in the Rodopi mountains. The regular routes are to London and Milano. There are also full year flights to Frankfurt. With the construction of the newly-found terminal, the airport's capacity rose to 1000 passengers in an hour.
The first passenger flight from Sofia to Plovdiv was carried out in 1928. On its present location, the airport was found in 1981, and the first flight came from Amsterdam with TU-154 plane. The new terminal started to operate in 2009.
The airport is just 150km away from Sofia and its airport. This distance on the highway is equal to about an hour and a half by car. Because of the closeness, when there is a dangerous fog in Sofia Airport, Plovdiv's airport can take the traffic. On several occasions it took the traffic of Bourgas and Varna airports too.
In the winter there are charter flights from Russia, Ireland, Great Britain etc. In 2011 the airport gave an account of almost 200% increase in passengers transported. The airport gets more and more popular not only because of its closeness to the resorts Pamporovo and Borovets, but also because of the SPA resorts Hisarya, Velingrad and Pavel Banya, which near too.
Each year on September 6th – one of Bulgaria's national holidays – there is an air show called “Sky for everyone”.
The airport has a parking with 50 spots for cars and 20 for buses. The bus transport is not as well developed, there is a taxi rank, but you are advised to look well on their tariffs.
