Varna Airport is the third biggest airport in the country, situated near Aksakovo section, just 7km. away from the center of the city.
The airport was found in 1948, but the first time a plane landed was in 1919. In 2011 a new 30cm. thick asphalt covering was laid out on the runway.
The airport has two terminals, but the second one is in operation only in the summer. It serves more than 100 destinations in 36 countries all over the world and annually transports over one million people.
It is busy mostly in the summer season. Many tourists choose this airport for starting point of their vacation on the Black Sea coast, because it is close to the resorts Albena, Golden Sands, Byala, Obzor, Konstantin and Elena, Kavarna and Sunny Beach.
Varna Airport, like the one in Bourgas, are managed by a German-Bulgarian company, which takes serious care for the development of the airports. Beside the recent change of the asphalt covering, one of the terminals was expanded, and the equipment in the airport covers all standards. A contract was recently signed for the construction of a new, third terminal.
Four bus lines serve as a connection from the Airport to Varna and the closest resorts. They all go at regular 15 minute intervals.
The airport has several cafes, a restaurant and fast food restaurants. The passengers may take advantage from the duty-free shops and the currency exchange bureaus. Recently the business and VIP lounges were renovated.
